Learn how trading works here

Short, practical guides to lots, pips, spreads, margin and orders, using the exact rules and numbers of this platform.

Trading Basics

The building blocks of every trade

Lots: how position size works

Gold, silver and forex positions are measured in lots. Crypto and US stocks use a USDT amount instead.

  • Forex: 1 lot = 100,000 units of the base currency, so 0.01 lot = 1,000 units.
  • Gold and silver: 1 lot = 100 troy ounces, so 0.01 lot = 1 oz.
  • Margin: each 0.01 lot needs $5 of margin.
Example0.10 lot of EUR/USD is 10,000 euros and uses $50 of margin. 0.05 lot of gold is 5 ounces and uses $25 of margin.

Pips and price moves

A pip is the standard unit of a currency price move: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for USD/JPY.

  • On EUR/USD, GBP/USD and AUD/USD one pip is worth $0.10 per 0.01 lot, $1.00 per 0.10 lot and $10.00 per lot.
  • On USD/JPY, USD/CAD and USD/CHF the dollar value of a pip changes with the exchange rate.
  • Gold and silver are simpler: 0.01 lot gains or loses $1 for every $1 the price moves.
ExampleYou buy 0.10 lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 and later close it when the Sell price is 1.1050, 50 pips higher. Profit: 50 pips × $1.00 = $50.00.

Bid, ask and spread

Every instrument has two prices. You buy at the ask (the higher, Buy price) and sell at the bid (the lower, Sell price).

A buy position closes at the Sell price and a sell position closes at the Buy price. The gap between the two is the spread, so a new position starts with a small loss equal to the spread.

Gold: … gap (fixed)
Silver, forex: … gap
Crypto, US stocks: … gap

Going long and short

Buy (long) if you expect the price to rise. Sell (short) if you expect it to fall. Both directions are available on every instrument and work the same way.

ExampleYou sell 0.05 lot of gold at $4,000.00 and close it when the Buy price is $3,980.00. Gold fell $20 and you hold 5 oz, so your profit is 5 × $20 = $100.00.
Margin & Risk

Margin, equity and stop-out

How your account is measured while positions are open, and what happens when losses grow.

The account formulas

Three numbers tell you how much room your account has:

Equity = Balance + floating P/L
Free margin = Equity − Margin
Margin level = Equity ÷ Margin × 100%

Unrealised profit counts towards equity, but it can only be used for new trades or withdrawn once the position is closed.

Stop-out

If your margin level falls to the stop-out level of …, the platform closes your most-losing position, then repeats until the margin level is back above it. Accounts are checked every minute, so in a fast market the loss at closing can be larger than at the stop-out level.

ExampleBalance $100.00. You buy 0.04 lot of gold, which uses $20.00 of margin. If gold falls far enough to cost you … (…), equity drops to …, a margin level of …, and the position is closed.

Negative balance protection

While several positions are open, a loss on one can take your balance below zero, because your other positions still back the account. When your last open position closes, any negative balance is reset to zero.

Managing risk

  • Decide how much you are prepared to lose before you open a trade, and size the position to match.
  • Use a stop loss. It is checked every minute and closes at the market price, so a fast move can cost more than planned.
  • Keep free margin in reserve instead of using it all on one trade.
  • Practise in the demo account before trading live.
  • Only trade with money you can afford to lose.
